make the case. >> we know spending has shot way up under president obama. what we know is the sbiet bl entitlement programs are unaffordable as they stand. doesn't mean we need to slash medicare today. i don't know anyone suggesting that. it does mean that this is the time, the opportunity to put in the reforms to slow the growth in those programs so we can afford them for the long run so, in fact, seniors can get the benefits they've been counting on and promising. we can't promise them that now because we can't afford these programs as they currently stand. the fiscal cliff creates the opportunity to force the reforms, to put in the reforms we all know need to be put in to place. that was what bowles/simpson was au about. it's not about today's deficit. it's about the future. the moment is now. >> what about the idea that dean is making. look, this is not the issue in terms of the debt and deficit. why are we putting this on the chopping block? >> well, he's right in one sense. president bush did a very effective job of bringing the budget deficit down un

i think obama will be speaking at some point today. and so that's definitely what traders have been focused on. but still while we are holding these bid levels, really kind of chop type trade and not a lot of energy, not a lot of yiks for the most part. >> what about the slew of special difference sends we've be dividends we've been seeing? >> i think that's been encouraging for the most part. but one thing i just heard about the dividends from microsoft and oracle, but i heard pc sales for microsoft were off like 20 some% year to year. so while they came out with the windows 8 launch into the holidays, really it's kind of backfired for the most part and there hasn't been a lot of major response to that relative to some of the other apple type releases that we've seen. and again it's just faltering if you will. but i think the positive energy if you will certainly contributed as well as the economic data this terms of contributing to the up side activity. but it's a bit of a grind to the up side. again, not these -- other than wednesda

what's obama doing with this first offer, do you think? >> i'm not exactly sure because i don't understand the economic rationale behind it. look at the world that we are in. it is a 2% u.s. growth rate. it is not the 3% we are historically used to. look what's going on in europe. look what's going on in asia, the slowdown there. look at the context at which we want to take money out of the private sector. taxes by definition is contractionary. >> for a while i wondered in first term figured look, the president sooner or later will realize he needs jobs to get re-elected so will come onboard with pro-growth stuff and jobs he was able to, you know, to be re-elected at 7.9%. now you want a legacy that shows that you had a good economy and that you got the jobless rate down. so you are going -- i'm -- maybe there's just a disconnect between whether people that work for him really understand what generates economic growth and jobs and what doesn't. and -- i mean, we will transform society in a way that maybe is more positive for him, obama car

i want to show you president obama is taking his fifth fiscal cliff plan on the road today if you will and there is a shot of him in pennsylvania. the president is speaking there. this comes fresh after republicans rejected his offer. >> yeah. that's right, scott. the president just got a tour of this toy factory in pennsylvania within the past couple minutes and now is speaking. we're told what he is going to say in this speech is that he wants a deal which raises taxes on the wealthy and he'll specifically say he wants a deal that raises tax rates on the wealthy not just limits deductions and other things. interestingly, scott, on the air force flight over there a white house spokesman briefed reporters and told them he was surprised republicans were so surprised about the details of the president's offer yesterday because the president talked about so much of this stuff early on. i can tell you that offer went over like a lead balloon here on capitol hill. republican members of congress were not thrilled with $1.6 trillion in new taxes and $50 billion in new stimulus style spending.
